Octavo is an independent quarterly about food and the people who make it. Each issue follows a single word — Salt, Bread, Bitter — through kitchens, fields and markets until it means something new. We pay every contributor, print on uncoated paper in Lisbon and never put a paywall in front of a story.

What we believe

Three rules we haven’t broken yet.

Three rules we haven’t broken yet.

01

We pay every contributor.

Writers, photographers, illustrators and cooks are paid on publication, at rates we print on the Pitch page.

02

No paywall, ever.

Every story is free to read online. The printed magazine is for people who want to keep it.

03

Printed close to home.

Uncoated paper from a mill in Spain, printed and posted from Lisbon. We know everyone by name.

Masthead
